When BYD’s Service & Test Centre in Colchester began experiencing widespread floor failure in their workshop bays, the signs were familiar: cracking along traffic lines, surface delamination, oil and chemical staining, and exposed, weakened concrete beneath the coating.
As a vehicle test facility, the workshop sees constant movement, hot tyres, brake dust, battery coolant systems, cleaning agents, and regular fluid spills. Over time, these conditions had chemically attacked the existing surface, breaking the bond to the slab and allowing moisture and contaminants to creep underneath. The result was lifting, flaking, and cracking right through the working heart of the bays.
4M Floors UK were brought in to diagnose, repair, and install a long-term system designed specifically for heavy automotive environments.
The Root Cause – Chemical & Mechanical Breakdown
The original coating had not failed because of age alone. It had failed because the environment outperformed the system.
Typical issues we identified:
Chemical attack from automotive fluids and cleaning agents
Hot-tyre pickup and shear stress in turning zones
Cracks tracking through the slab and reflecting through the coating
Poor adhesion where contaminants had penetrated the substrate
Localised spalling where moisture and salts had migrated upward
In a test centre, floors don’t get a gentle life. They are washed, spilled on, heated, and driven across all day, every day.
This is precisely the scenario Deckshield ID is designed for.
Preparation – The Part That Determines the Outcome
Before any resin is installed, the real work happens in the concrete.
We mechanically diamond-ground the entire surface to remove all failed material and open the slab. All cracks were chased, cleaned, and resin-repaired. Contaminated areas were cut back to sound concrete. Only once we had a clean, porous, structurally sound substrate could we begin rebuilding the floor properly.
This stage is where most failures are prevented.
Installing Deckshield ID – Built for Automotive Environments
Deckshield ID is a heavy-duty, anti-slip, chemical-resistant system developed for car parks, workshops, and service bays. It provides:
Excellent resistance to oils, fuels, brake fluids, and cleaning chemicals
Anti-slip texture for safe working conditions
High abrasion resistance for vehicle traffic and equipment
Seamless, easy-clean finish for hygiene and maintenance
Long-term bond to properly prepared concrete
A grey quartz broadcast finish was selected to provide durability with a professional, clean appearance under the vehicle lifts and service bays.
This isn’t paint. This is a structural wearing surface.
Bay Markings with QD Linemarker
Once the Deckshield system had cured, the workshop layout was reinstated using QD Linemarker for crisp, high-definition bay markings.
QD Linemarker is ideal in live operational environments because it:
Dries rapidly, reducing downtime
Bonds exceptionally well to resin systems
Produces sharp, durable lines that resist tyre scuffing and cleaning regimes
Maintains brightness under workshop lighting
The result is a workshop that not only performs correctly but looks organised, safe, and professional.
The Transformation
The difference between the failing floor and the finished system is more than visual.
Before:
Cracked, lifting coating
Contaminated, weakened concrete
Unsafe and difficult to clean
After:
Seamless, anti-slip, chemical-resistant surface
Structurally repaired slab
Clearly defined working bays
A floor designed for the exact conditions it will face daily
This is what happens when the right system meets the right preparation.
Why This System Was the Correct Choice for a Test Centre
A vehicle test and service centre is one of the harshest indoor environments for a floor. The combination of chemicals, heat, traffic, and constant cleaning will quickly expose any weakness in specification or preparation.
Deckshield ID is widely used in car parks and automotive facilities for this reason — it is designed to take punishment without failing.
By pairing it with meticulous preparation and professional line marking, 4M Floors UK delivered a floor that will protect the concrete, improve safety, and withstand years of heavy use.
Need a Floor That Can Handle Real Automotive Abuse?
If your workshop floor is cracking, lifting, or constantly staining, it’s usually a sign the system was never designed for the environment in the first place.
4M Floors UK specialise in diagnosing these failures and installing resin systems that are fit for purpose — not just visually appealing, but technically correct.
Because in automotive environments, the floor is part of the equipment.
